Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler? -- The Key Differences

Posted by Katie Miller on

What is the difference between a Lip Flip and Lip Filler? These two procedures are commonly confused for one another, as both treatments can cause the lips to appear more full.

A “lip flip” has become a popular treatment lately, and it causes the upper lip to appear more full by relaxing the lip muscle. This treatment uses 2-6 units of Botox or Dysport injected above the upper lip to help the muscle relax and cause it to appear more full. This treatment is also used to help a “gummy smile” so that there is more show of the upper lip and less of the gums above your teeth. This treatment does not add volume to the lip or cause it to look more hydrated, it simply changes the way that the upper lip appears when you smile. A Lip Flip treatment needs a light dose, so that you still have full function of your mouth. Our expert injectors can definitely do that for you!

A Lip Flip can be completed in less than 15 minutes, costs around $22-$66 and lasts about 6-8 weeks. Why does this style of Botox treatment last only 6-8 weeks, instead of the usual 12 weeks when injected in other places? We constantly move the muscle around our mouth when talking, eating, drinking, which causes it to wear off sooner!

Lip Filler is a gel-like substance that is injected into the lips to hydrate or slightly add volume, which causes the lips to be more full. Filler is hyaluronic acid based, which is naturally occurring in the body, and it works by pulling fluid into that area. This product can be dissolved if necessary. Our highly trained injectors will discuss what type of end result you are seeking and choose a filler based upon that assessment.

A Lip Filler treatment takes 1 hour, with a 20 minute topical numbing application or a dental block performed to reduce discomfort. Lip Filler costs start at $600, and the treatment usually lasts 9-15 months.

Some patients are great candidates for a combination of both treatments! As with any cosmetic procedure, we recommend you consult with one of our providers to determine which treatment is right for you.
